Overview
Our client, a leading precision oncology research organization, is seeking a highly motivated and experienced Senior Research Scientist, Biophysics to support small molecule drug discovery efforts.
The successful candidate will join a collaborative Lead Discovery team that includes experts in Biophysics, Bioassays, Structural Biology, Protein Sciences, and Compound Management. This hands-on laboratory position focuses on the biophysical and mechanistic characterization of small-molecule ligands binding to protein targets — playing a critical role in understanding molecular mechanisms of action and advancing the discovery pipeline.
This position is based onsite in South San Francisco, CA and reports to the Principal Research Scientist, Biophysics.
Key Responsibilities
- Design and implement binding characterization studies of small molecules and proteins using surface plasmon resonance (SPR) platforms (Biacore S200 and 8K+).
- Conduct routine compound screening and advanced mechanistic studies using biophysical assays such as nanoDSF, DLS, and Spectral Shift.
- Coordinate and manage external biophysical studies with CRO partners.
- Analyze, interpret, and present experimental data to support SAR development and guide hit-to-lead and lead optimization efforts.
- Maintain detailed electronic lab records and prepare clear, publication-quality reports and presentations.
- Collaborate closely with cross-functional discovery teams to translate biophysical insights into actionable project outcomes.
Qualifications
- Education: Ph.D. in Biophysics, Biochemistry, or a related discipline.
- Experience: Minimum 3+ years of industry or relevant academic experience in small molecule drug discovery biophysics.
- Demonstrated expertise in designing, executing, and interpreting biophysical characterization of small molecule–protein interactions via SPR.
- Strong background in complementary biophysical techniques such as TSA, DLS, Spectral Shift, NMR, or ITC.
- Familiarity with data visualization and statistical software (e.g., GraphPad, Prism) is a plus.
- Proven ability to troubleshoot, plan, and execute complex experiments independently.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills, with the ability to present findings clearly to scientific and cross-functional teams.
