Director-Level AI Scientist – Foundation Models & Generative AI
Remote (U.S.) | Full-Time | $300,000 Base + $60,000 STIP + $50,000–$100,000 Sign-On
We're partnering with an industry-leading AI technology company building the next generation of foundation models powering intelligent, real-world systems at global scale.
This is a senior research opportunity for someone who has personally built and trained large language or foundation models from scratch at scale — not simply fine-tuned existing models.
What You'll Do
- Design and train large-scale transformer and foundation models from the ground up.
- Own key architectural decisions across language, multimodal, and emerging model architectures.
- Lead research into optimization, scaling laws, training stability, and model efficiency.
- Solve training divergence and convergence challenges across large-scale GPU clusters.
- Develop approaches to improve inference performance and compute efficiency.
- Partner with ML systems engineers while owning model architecture and research direction.
- Influence the long-term technical roadmap for next-generation generative AI systems.
What You'll Bring
- Proven experience pre-training large-scale LLMs or foundation models from scratch.
- Deep expertise in transformers, modern deep learning, optimization, and representation learning.
- Strong knowledge of attention architectures, RoPE, GQA, MoE, and related techniques.
- Experience with FSDP, ZeRO, tensor parallelism, pipeline parallelism, and distributed GPU training.
- Hands-on experience with BF16/FP8, gradient checkpointing, and large-scale training infrastructure.
- Strong understanding of scaling laws, compute/data tradeoffs, and training stability.
- Experience with RLHF, DPO, GRPO, or other modern alignment techniques is highly desirable.
- Track record of driving high-level technical or research direction.
You'll Solve Problems Like
- Preventing training divergence at extreme model scale.
- Improving model convergence and generalization.
- Scaling training efficiently across large GPU clusters.
- Building multimodal and hybrid foundation-model architectures.
- Advancing production-grade generative AI capabilities.
Compensation & Benefits
- Base Salary: $300,000
- Annual STIP: $60,000
- Sign-On Bonus: $50,000–$100,000
- Equity opportunity
- Comprehensive medical, dental, and vision coverage
- Life and disability insurance
- Generous PTO and paid holidays
- Retirement benefits
- Remote work flexibility
If you've built foundation models from scratch and want to take a senior role shaping next-generation AI systems deployed at global scale, we'd love to hear from you.
