How the Recruits Lab Hiring Intelligence Index™ is built
A transparent explanation of what the Index is, what it isn't, and how each score, rating, and trend arrow is produced.
What the Index is
The Recruits Lab Hiring Intelligence Index™ is a proprietary editorial index that summarizes directional hiring conditions across the sectors we recruit in: AI & Machine Learning, Biotechnology, Pharmaceuticals, Medical Devices, Healthcare Technology, SaaS, Cybersecurity, and venture-backed Executive Search.
For each market, we publish a composite score (0–100), qualitative ratings across five dimensions, and a directional trend arrow. The composite is an editorial judgment — not a statistical model — informed by the inputs described below.
What the Index is not
- It is not a real-time labor market dataset.
- It is not automated aggregation of public job postings.
- It is not derived from government employment statistics.
- It is not a forecast or a guarantee of future hiring outcomes.
- It is not investment, legal, or professional advice.
Inputs we synthesize
- Active Recruits Lab search engagements across all covered sectors.
- Candidate conversations, screens, and offer negotiations with senior operators, technical leaders, scientific leaders, and executives.
- Compensation trends observed in live offers, counteroffers, and equity packages.
- Published Recruits Lab research — including Hiring Reports, Salary Guides, and Hiring Guides.
- Case study patterns across closed searches (velocity, competition, offer dynamics).
- Editorial context from executive recruiting experience across venture-backed AI, life sciences, healthcare technology, SaaS, cybersecurity, and executive search.
The five qualitative dimensions
Each market is rated across five dimensions:
| Dimension | Scale |
|---|---|
| Hiring Demand | Low → Moderate → High → Very High |
| Talent Availability | Abundant → Moderate → Limited → Very Limited |
| Hiring Competition | Low → Moderate → High → Extreme |
| Compensation Pressure | Low → Moderate → High → Very High |
| Time-to-Hire Outlook | Fast → Moderate → Slow |
| Directional Trend | ↑ Improving · → Stable · ↓ Cooling |
How the composite score is produced
The composite (0–100) is an editorial roll-up of the five dimensions above, weighted by their observed impact on time-to-close and offer economics in our active engagements. Higher scores indicate more intense hiring conditions — more demand, thinner supply, more competition, more compensation pressure, and slower cycles.
Because the composite is editorial, we deliberately publish the underlying ratings and drivers alongside it. Readers should treat the number as a directional summary, not a precise measurement.
Historical snapshots
Each market includes a quarterly composite history so readers can see the direction of travel, not just the current level. Historical values are our editorial reconstruction of prior quarters using the same methodology; they are revised when we materially update our approach and always dated.
Update cadence
The Index is reviewed quarterly. The current snapshot is Q3 2026, last reviewed 2026-07-15. The next scheduled review is 2026-10-15. Material changes between reviews are noted in the affected market card.
How to use it
Founders, CEOs, CTOs, Chief Scientific Officers, Chief Medical Officers, Heads of People, and boards use the Index to frame hiring strategy conversations — where to expect competition, where compensation pressure is building, and where cycles are slowing. Pair the Index with Recruits Lab's Hiring Reports, Salary Guides, and Case Studies for the underlying detail.
